The IfUM and its acting persons on the one hand are doing research work on economic, instrumental and legal issues of environmental management (e.g. climate change, waste management, noise abatement strategies as well as on efficient policies for improving the environmental situation on the macroeconomic, the business and the public administration sector. Additionally they are consultants for public bodies such as environmental ministries and agencies and for Berlin and German firms.
On the other hand these persons are teaching environmental management with respect to business, national and sub-national governments and international communities in the Elective “Environmental Management”, which can be chosen by the students of ESCP Europe out of altogether 6 Electives. These lectures are held by the above named persons, who are specialists in macro-economic and instrumental matters (Prof. Wicke), in legal matters (Prof. Knebel) and business administration matters (Dr. Lieback) of environmental management.

Prof. Wicke is professor both at the Technical University of Berlin and ESCP Europe for Environmental Policies and Management; he hold an Engineer’s degree in technical economics (technical chemistry) and is the author of two standard readers in national and business environmental management. As a result of being Scientific Director at the Umweltbundesamt for long years and being a Deputy Minister for environmental issues in the City and Federal State of Berlin and of his various international assignments on behalf of Berlin and for the Federal Environmental Agency he has extensive political knowledge both at the national and the international level. (He has been a delegate and executive head in various international environmental conferences for Berlin and Germany.)
In addition to the 12 to 15 scientific and scientific-popular books he has published about 200 scientific and political articles and has managed around 120 various (economic-technical) environmental projects for the Federal Environmental Agency in all national and international environmental areas of activities (water, waste, noise and air-pollution, traffic and energy management, international issues of forest protection and of combating climate change and so on.) Beside of this he has worked since 1996 as consultant for various German firms, for the federal state of Baden-Württemberg and for the Federal Envirionmental Agency of Germany. In 1986 Prof. Wicke received the most prestigious “Theodor Heuss Preis (award)” for “his permanent and successful efforts to reconcile economy and ecology”.
