The Apprenticeship in France,
the Opportunity for Future Recruitment

An apprentice benefits from two skill-acquisition situations: through the academic curriculum and through real-life business practice.

ESCP Europe therefore entrusts an important role to companies when they train apprentices.
It is a strong commitment to working with the School. The employment of a high-potential apprentice until the end of their studies is a great opportunity for a possible post-apprenticeship recruitment.

Recruit apprentices in France

The Apprenticeship Tracks in France for Master in Management Students

ESCP Europe's two-year Apprenticeship Programme welcomes around a hundred students annually from the Grande Ecole Master in Management. Students are selected to complete a specialised curriculum co-designed by the School and a sponsoring company.
The alternation between periods at School and work enables students to adapt to company life without losing contact with the School, thus combining theoretical learning and real-life work experience into a coherent whole. The Apprentissage study option enables French companies to:

  • actively participate in the education of an undergraduate student
  • have access to a motivated and hard-working student over a long-term period
  • benefit from an effective pre-recruitment method

For all the tracks, the students graduate at the end of their apprenticeship contract and are theoretically available for immediate recruitment by companies.

24-month track

  • Candidate profile
All apprentices come from the classes préparatoires sector. They start their apprenticeship after the first year of the Master in Management programme at ESCP Europe.
  • Schedule
This course starts in October of year N and finishes in August N+2 during the Master 1 and 2 years of the Master in Management programme.

18-month track

  • Candidate profile
Students enter Master 1 directly and are therefore of diverse academic and geographical origins. Due to the selection method, they do not come from classes préparatoires.
  • Schedule
The schedule is the same as the 24-month Track but starting in January of year N and terminating end August N+1.

14-month track

  • Candidate profile
The apprentices are students who enter directly from classic educational backgrounds, namely classes préparatoires, pre-Master and Master.
Some will have had a gap year. They are therefore in the final years of their studies and have attained an advanced academic level and developed a well-defined career plan with extensive in-company experience.
  • Schedule
The specific schedule is organised in two possible ways:
    • whole periods from June year N to end August N+1, of which 5 consecutive months are full-time in-company from January to May
    • weekly alternation 3/5 and ⅖

Michel Dennery, Director of Risk Management and Head of Apprenticeships, GDF Suez

Apprenticeship from company’s point of view

Michel Dennery
Director of Risk Management
Head of Apprenticeships
GDF Suez

What are the 3 key skills that interest you in an apprentice?

Students who enter ESCP Europe have already proven their capacity to learn. Therefore, I am looking for someone with a particularly mature attitude, good interpersonal skills, and rigour; convictions, even at the risk of making mistakes, the ability to think laterally, a little bit crazy, offbeat and Utopian, with the desire to move from ideas to putting them into practice.

What do you particularly like about the ESCP Europe students you take on apprenticeship?

Their all-round education, their openmindedness and their cross-departmental aptitudes - all are indispensable to company risk management.

How do you see your role as Head of Apprenticeship? What satisfaction does it give you?

I am satisfied if the apprentices attain professional autonomy, an overview of their professional life, and find jobs at the end of their training.

What do you most like about your job as Head of Apprenticeships?

When my ex-apprentices tell me about their successes with smiles on their faces: this happened again just today.

The apprenticeship track: a learning laboratory

Corinne Hahn
Associate Professeur, Academic Director of the Master in Management Apprenticeship track
ESCP Europe

Building a sandwich course should normally lead to a total rethink of teaching methods. However, most frequently the alternation between study and professional life stops at the classroom door and this necessitates a complete re-evalutation. At ESCP Europe, we have achieved this goal thanks to the involvement of teachers in a learner centered on the apprenctice, professor tutor and apprenticeship manager triangle.

The apprenticeship track has become a teaching laboratory at ESCP Europe, and was inspired by the sandwich course model designed by Geay*, adapted to the field of higher education in management.

This laboratory enables us to experiment with mechanisms aiming to support the acquisition of professional skills for our students, and to strengthen links with companies who have entrusted us with their training programmes for almost 15 years.
