Description


The course will help participants see how competition works in a variety of contexts, using theoretical and practical cases. It will also equip participants with the skills to apply these insights to the external environment.

Objectives


This module is focused on competition:

  • understanding what competition is
  • how the competitive environment affects companies
  • how competition is evolving, and
  • what the implications are at the firm level
Audience


Managers of mid- to large-sized companies that participate in C level discussions about corporate strategy, and consultants working in the field of competitive behaviour.

Academic Direction


Dr Anthony J. Evans is currently Associate Professor of Economics at ESCP Europe Business School. His research interests are in corporate entrepreneurship, monetary theory, and transitional markets. He has published in journals such as Eastern European Economics, Constitutional Political Economy and The Review of Austrian Economics, and his recent co-authored book The Neoliberal Revolution in Eastern Europe: Economic Ideas in the Transition from Communism was published in 2009 by Edward Elgar.

He has authored policy papers for the Conservative Party, European Investment Fund, Financial Reporting Council and the Competition Commission on a range of market-process issues, and has conducted applied research projects with a number of corporate sponsors.

Anthony received his MA and Ph.D. in Economics from George Mason University, USA, and a BA (Hons) from the University of Liverpool, UK.


Dr Terence Tse is an Associate Professor at the ESCP Europe London campus. Before joining ESCP Europe in 2006, he worked at Ernst & Young, focusing on advisory to the UK financial services sector.

Terence began his career as a mergers and acquisitions analyst at Schroders in Montréal and New York. Throughout his career, he has been a consultant to different companies, including a University of Cambridge-based biotech start-up and major corporations such as Laing O'Rouke, Shell, F&C Asset Management, Alitalia and Alliance Boots.

He obtained his doctoral degree from the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, UK. He also holds a Master of Arts in Corporate Strategy and Governance from the University of Nottingham, UK, and a Master of Economics from the Universität des Saarlandes, Germany. Terence earned his Bachelor of Arts in German and Economics from the University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Terence has published a number of articles in the areas of corporate finance and management in English, Chinese and Italian.

Key points
  • Managing competition: understanding bilateral competition in a negotiation and collusive situation, the importance of competition in a market setting, and the role and impact of regulation.

  • The macroeconomics of the financial crisis: an introduction to the basics of finance and macroeconomic policy, and how these relate to the recent financial crisis. Participants develop an understanding of how economic policies can affect the economy and society, and extended logically, the business environment they are facing daily.

  • Current events in the Eurozone: a look at famous examples of currency and debt crises, and an application to the Eurozone.

  • Microeconomics of competitiveness: a truncated version of the course taught by Professor Michael Porter at Harvard Business School, looking at how competitiveness is developed at national and cluster levels.
Content


Pedagogical Approach

This module will utilise a combination of teaching methods, focusing predominately on participant-centred learning. A number of famous business cases will be employed and it is imperative that participants read these in advance of the module. In addition, the instructors will draw upon the latest theoretical advances in management research to provide the underlying foundations for best practice.
