Globalization has led companies to operate across geographic and organizational barriers. Remote management takes place when the manager is physically distant from subordinates and unable to follow their work directly. We aim to understand the managerial practices used in this situation, focusing on the areas of supervision and communication over distance. Geographic distance presents particular challenges, the resolution of which cannot necessarily be limited to the use of tools such as electronic performance monitoring or electronic communication. Our second objective is to identify the impact of remote management on managerial relationships. When the challenges of remote management are not properly met, geographic distance transforms the managerial relationship into a contractual relationship. We also study the impacts of subjective distance vs. objective distance on management relationships.
