2013 International Colloquium of the review Politiques et Management Public (PMP)

The diffusion of numbers and the development of the role they play in contemporary society, both to describe matters of fact and, increasingly, to evaluate them, have become self-evident. Their overriding influence has been demonstrated in numerous ways.

The novelty resides not so much in the importance and availability of numbers in public and private administration, but rather in the development of transparency demands, with the consequence that these numbers now circulate freely in the public sphere and escape from usual restrictions rooted in business confidentiality or administrative secret.
