Arnaud de Puyfontaine (ESCP 88), new Chairman of ESCP Europe Alumni

In January, Arnaud de Puyfontaine (ESCP 88) was appointed Chairman of ESCP Europe Alumni – which brings together 35,000 graduates across the world – after Patrick Gounelle (ESCP 71). He is currently the Executive Vice-President of Hearst Magazines International, a leader in the international magazine industry.

Arnaud de Puyfontaine spent 5 years from 1990 in various senior positions at Le Figaro, before he joined Emap, where he contributed to setting up the French branch. He soon rose to COO and then CEO and Chairman in 1999. In 2000 he was appointed on the board of Emap Plc and chaired EMW, Emap/Wanadoo's digital subsidiary. When Emap was aquired by the Italian group Mondadori in 2006, Arnaud de Puyfontaine held the position of CEO France, sitting on the group's board in Milan. In 2007, he became Chairman for Mondadori France and took on responsibility for the group's global digital development and operations.

In 2008, Arnaud de Puyfontaine chaired the industry committee of a summit French President Nicolas Sarkozy set up to find solutions to the structural economic difficulties faced by the press industry. He was commissioned later to implement the recommendations.

He joined Hearst in 2009 and is based in London, where he also sits on the audit committee of the Periodical Publishers Association. He also continues to be a player on the media scene in France, where he has co-founded Elteg, a startup developing a technological and marketing platform for online media and is Director of the Aspen Institute and a member of the Dialogue Économique of the French employers' organisation, MEDEF.

He has been rewarded for his endeavours with the Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite and l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres.

He continues his role as patron for the 2007 Master in Management class.

Here is the letter he addressed to all ESCP Europe Alumni members following his appointment:

"Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure and enormous pride that I succeeded Patrick Gounelle, at the start of 2011, as Chairman of ESCP Europe Alumni and accepted the responsibilities that the Board has conferred on me.

ESCP Europe is among the top management education centres of the world, with consistently excellent research and targeted, innovative teaching.

Our 35,000 graduates today represent a family, a community and a valuable network in an environment that is open and globalised, one that we belong to.  A sense of solidarity and mutual recognition are key values around which the aspirations of ESCP Europe Alumni are formed.

To have the ESCP Europe ‘reflex’, to build on the international radiance of our institution, to perpetuate our standards of excellence – these are some of the priorities that I have set myself as I take on the new responsibilities.

Following on from Patrick Gounelle, whose actions and dedication over the last four years I salute, and having received so much from our business school, it is with great enthusiasm that I am engaging in this role. I am at the service of our community.

Very best wishes to you all,

Arnaud de Puyfontaine"
