International entrepreneurship strategies, Chinese culture and digital innovation: The EMDIEL in Shanghai

Another step towards developing an entrepreneurial mindset and skills to drive and shape digital innovation: The first cohort of the Executive Master in Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurial Leadership (EMDIEL) just finished its second module in China.

During one intense week, the participants immersed themselves in Shanghai’s famous local startup-scene, having encounters with inspiring entrepreneurs and investors. The site visits covered a wide range of different business models and fields, such as fintech (Madai Wealth), online health (Green Apple Health), organic food delivery (Fresh and Fresh) and a restaurant chain (Element Fresh).

To learn more about Chinese culture, entrepreneurship and digital innovation in Shanghai, the EMDIELs attended also lectures with Prof. Xiangdong Qin from Jiao Tong University, one of the most prestigious universities in China. Besides, the students profited from several options to network with impactful ESCP Europe alumni running their businesses in Shanghai.

One of the week’s highlights: Fred Raillard, founder and CEO of Fred and Farid, an award-winning digital agency, shared extremely valuable insights in digital branding and communication in a multinational environment. In small teams, the students performed a creative consulting mission for one of Fred’s clients, a leader of the German automotive industry. The teams dived deep in the Chinese market, not just crunching numbers but also doing field research by getting in contact with the locals. At the end of the week, Betrand Regnier on behalf of ESCP Europe’s long-standing partner EY welcomed the group in Shanghai’s financial district. The office in the 50th floor offered a great view over the city. Overwhelmed by brilliant pitches showing a great diversity of ideas, the jury around Fred selected their winners in different categories.

Jan-Malte Vogelsmeier, Head of Global Project Management Office at arvato, Bertelsmann: "Getting global perspectives and first hand insights into the world’s most vibrant entrepreneurship ecosystems have been the reasons for me to choose the EMDIEL at ESCP Europe. And this is exactly what we experienced in Shanghai. Besides, our team spirit has been fostered through numerous activities making each of us looking forward to October to continue with our next module in Paris."
