Professor Andreas Kaplan is the new Rector of ESCP Europe Business School in Berlin

At the beginning of April 2017, Professor Andreas Kaplan took up his position as the new rector of ESCP Europe Business School in Berlin.

The 39-year-old looks back on more than a decade in executive roles at ESCP Europe. As the former Dean for Academic Affairs, Andreas Kaplan was responsible for developing courses at all business school locations, both for the Bachelor and Masters programmes, as well as for the new MBA programme

Prior to this, he was Director of Brand and Communications at ESCP Europe, as well as elected head of the faculty’s marketing department.

“I am very proud and look forward to my duties as rector. With our six locations, and more than 100 partner universities, we are the most international and also the most European business school in Germany”, says Professor Andreas Kaplan, adding: “Our students and participants in Executive Education have one thing in common – they regard Europe and globalization as an opportunity, and appreciate the strong commitment to interculturalism at ESCP Europe. Especially in these politically troubled times, my priority is to bring diversity, intercultural cooperation and management into the public discussion in Germany and beyond.”

Key focus of ESCP Europe in Berlin

The academic focus of ESCP Europe in Germany is on the development of current economic and business-related issues in the coming years. These topics include entrepreneurship and innovation, digital transformation and sustainability, as well as an ongoing focus on international management issues and the development of intercultural competence. 

Frank Bournois, Dean of ESCP Europe, sees Andreas Kaplan, who was elected by his colleagues, students and co-workers, as the ideal person to occupy the top position in Berlin. “No other European city is shaped by digital creativity and change as much as Berlin. A business school like ours is the perfect vantage point in Berlin from which to witness new technologies and sociological trends. Professor Andreas Kaplan has amassed a great deal of expertise in the digital and social media sector, and will quickly analyse new developments and their relevance to business and management and, above all, contribute to the broad range of Executive Education opportunities.”

New courses and offers in the field of Executive Education restarting this year: From September, the new master’s degree programme in Big Data and Business Analytics is on offer in Berlin and Paris, follows the successful start of the two specialized master programmes, the MSc in International Sales Management and the MMSc in International Sustainability Managementt, in 2016. In the field of Executive Education, the Executive Master in Energy Management has been relaunched and the training programme for women in management positions has been expanded.

 “When developing our programmes, we work closely with our business partners in order to integrate their needs and requirements into our teaching”, says Andreas Kaplan. “This close relationship with the economy is also central to our talent management and career services, in order to prepare our students for their future career as best as possible,” he explains.

About Professor Andreas Kaplan

Andreas M. Kaplan did his Habilitation at the Sorbonne and received his doctorate at the University of Cologne and HEC Paris. While working on his dissertation, a research project took him to INSEAD in Fontainebleau. Andreas M. Kaplan has completed the Master of Public Administration (MPA) at the École Nationale d’Administration (ENA, French National School of Public Administration) in Strasburg, a MSc in Management at ESCP Europe and a BSc at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.

Andreas Kaplan’s research is focused on social media and the digital world. With over 12,000 citations on Google Scholar and more than 100 scholarly publications, the majority of which are in leading national and international journals, Professor Kaplan is ranked among the top 50 business and management authors worldwide, according to John Wiley & Sons. Particularly noteworthy is his article "Users of the World, United! The challenges and opportunities of social media", published in Business Horizons. The article defines the term social media and develops a classification for the different types of social media. From 2011 to 2015, this article was selected by Science Direct as the “hottest article” of the year in the Business and Management category. In 2013, Kaplan received the annual Business Horizons Best Article Award, sponsored by Elsevier, for his article “If you love something, let it go mobile: Mobile marketing and mobile social media.”

Pr. Kaplan also publishes papers on higher and university education. He is particularly interested in the impact of digitalization on higher education, its development and transformation.
