Student Testimonial

Salomé Germain – MSc in Energy Management - ESCP

The MSc in Energy Management neatly couples the fundamentals of business management modules with a focus on the energy industry. The MEM was holistic and provided a clear view of the energy industry (oil & gas, power markets, electricity, renewables, etc.), both in terms of business and resources management. Whether you want to work in the oil and gas industry or in electricity, you need to have this 360-degree view to understand the key challenges, other stakeholders and constraints. The MEM gave me the tools to be polyvalent.

"Even better, it was much more than an ordinary master’s degree: the conferences and meetings with companies that were organised by the ESCP Energy Management Centre were also giving us the tools to kick-off our career!

"Living in London was also an amazing experience and, most importantly, this Master introduced me to great people! Our class was made up of 23 students from 15 nationalities, and this diversity of cultural, academic and professional backgrounds created an ideal ground for personal growth. We also helped each other a lot: some people were giving finance courses to others, while some were more knowledgeable on the technical aspects of the oil industry. I felt a real community within our cohort.

Throughout the project, tutoring is provided by an ESCP professor.

Students learn how to approach an issue with a critical mindset, and how to react swiftly in unexpected situations with a creative and open-minded attitude.

Through the Company Consultancy Project, students learn how to work efficiently as a team and enhance their skills in:

  • Client Interaction

PROFESSIONAL MISSION – TERM 4
Jul-Dec: A professional mission in the form of an in-company internship or direct employment lasting at least 4 months.

At the heart of the MSc in Energy Management specialisation is the required minimum four-month professional experience (full-time job or internship), during which students work in a management training role within a client company.

This provides participants with the opportunity to be confronted with real business life conditions and develop their practical skills as part of an action learning pedagogy. These important jobseeking skills are developed with the professional support of School specialists in the Careers Office and the Alumni Association.

Satisfactory fulfilment of the work requirement is also dependent on the completion of an internship/employment report reviewed by the School and the internship sponsor/employer.

Your degree is awarded upon the passing of all modules and the thesis, and completing the internship requirement.

The Corporate Relations Department

The Corporate Relations Department is dedicated to gathering placement offers from many companies. The department also organises a series of Careers fairs and events, giving you many opportunities to make contact.

PROFESSIONAL THESIS & RESEARCH SEMINAR – TERM 4
Jul-Dec: Writing and defending a Professional Thesis

Students are required to complete a Professional Master thesis which, in some cases, may be completed in partnership with a sponsor organisation.

The thesis is an individual applied research project for the Master degree and must be approximately 12,000 words. It is a theory/praxis-driven investigation into a relevant business or management issue. Each student conducts the thesis under the supervision of a faculty member.

Students are encouraged from the start of the specialisation to think about a topic for their thesis.

At the end of the specialisation, a written thesis is submitted. A viva voce oral examination is also held at which the research is presented to and assessed by an academic jury.

Professional thesis represents 17 of the total of 90 ECTS credits earned over this academic year.

During this time, students will also participate in a mandatory Research Seminar held by an ESCP professor. This seminar represents 3 ECTS credits of the total 90 earned over this academic year.

The Master thesis requirement enables students to:
  • Develop skills in problem identification and formulation
  • Select appropriate research methods
  • Plan a complex piece of work
  • Collect and interpret relevant data
  • Carry out a critical analysis and formulate recommendations

Energy Expert Testimonial

Stephen EDWARDS, CEO, Tailwind Energy Ltd

My interaction with the ESCP community and its Energy Management Centre is always a refreshing engagement. Whilst the formal lectures and subject matter is given sufficient air time and consideration, the real learnings come via the ensuing discussion. As an example, the quality and pace of one debate quickly led from broad topics such as oil price variables, M&A market liquidity and the NOC / IOC dynamic, to local impacts such as environmental governance and industry accountabilities - all in the context of the question ‘can the oil industry coexist with society’s expectations?’ The collective energy, knowledge and participation of the ESCP cohorts is as unique as it is impressive.”

Michael JEFFERSON, Editor, Energy policy Journal and fmr. Chief Economist at Shell

ESCP is well known for its unique historical status and powerful international network. But what makes the energy programmes extra special is the input from those who have held, and those who still hold, senior posts in the energy policy and management fields. There is nothing like building on the insights provided by those with practical experience. I have been highly impressed by the quality of students.”
