It is evident that energy companies and policy makers are facing significant challenges as we enter a new era. The issues to be addressed are many: can we count on technological breakthroughs to cope with surging energy demand, and at the same time handle the long-term environmental constraints? What type of regulatory framework is most likely to provide the incentives for necessary changes to take place? To what extent are nations ready to cooperate in addressing global energy and environmental challenges? Can we be assured that capital markets will provide the tremendous funds needed to develop energy infrastructures and improve energy efficiency? The sector has long been segmented into upstream versus downstream, oil and gas versus utilities, resulting in a high degree of specialisation. Today’s managers need to have a broader perspective with an integrated view of the various issues in order to cope with complexity; to have a clear understanding of antagonisms across players; and to eventually be able to anticipate and design proper sets of actions and strategies. In other words, to enable them to deal effectively with the dramatic changes taking place.

As a leading European business school, ESCP Europe is involved in shaping the future of the energy industry. The Executive Master in Energy Management (EMEM) and Energy Masterclasses at ESCP Europe educate the next generation of leaders and pioneering thinkers in the energy sector through a unique style of business education across four European campuses: London, Berlin, Paris and Madrid. The EMEM and Masterclasses develop leadership practice immersed in real-world challenges within the energy sector, building upon a diverse community of ESCP Europe faculty experts and world-leading professionals. The curriculum is developed through the expertise of our networks in areas such as oil, gas, renewables, electricity and others, which are at the heart of the EMEM programme. In addition, the scrutinising energy initiatives around the world, the location of each module provides focus on the local market and supplies in-depth knowledge according to your needs. The key aim of the EMEM and Masterclasses is to provide you with first-class knowledge of the actual and plausible changes in the nature of the business environment.

First, on a micro level, Lebanon is set for a significant energy landscape remodelling based on the potential offshore hydrocarbons resources and the newly ratified electricity generation and distribution projects. Second, on a macro level, renewables are being asserted as a game changer for the international energy scene. Accordingly, after comparing several energy -related programmes, the EMEM proved to be the most suitable for me in terms of my time availability and the rich international exposure it offers. The programme has an extensive curriculum that introduced an in-depth understanding of economics, financing, pricing, and legal frameworks for oil & gas, renewables, and electricity sectors. The latter coupled with my banking and project finance expertise is proving to determine a new growth path in my career, and opening new ones as well..”

“My undergraduate education and my current career are in general management, so pursuing an MBA would have been repetitive. Therefore, I was very excited when I found out about the Executive Master in Energy Management programme at ESCP Europe. The following factors were decisive in my decision to join the programme: small classes with interactive teaching methods; instructors who worked in the energy industry; the ability to pursue the degree while still working full time; a large alumni network; and programme delivery fully in English with a diverse groupof participants from around the world. Each module exposed me to various energy-sector topics, from oil and gas in London, to renewables in Berlin, and policy and trading in Paris. Thanks to the EMEM programme, I now have a deeper understanding of the industry and it has prepared me for future career transitions. I highly recommend this programme for anyone who is passionate about the energy industry and would like to work in any sector. Thank you, ESCP Europe, for one of the greatest experiences of my life.”

The whole industry was impacted by rapid cost cutting, resulting in mass layoffs. This is when I decided to transform my career, for which I needed to understand what was happening in the energy transition and acquire new skills that would help me adjust to the evolving industry. ESCP Europe’s EMEM programme was the perfect answer to my needs, as the course addressed energy challenges from the economic and financial angles. Overall, this programme fulfilled my curiosity, my aspirations and, most importantly, it opened doors for a new career path in the energy sector. I am currently the Senior Development Manager for Symbior Solar, a provider of industrial solar solutions in the emerging markets in Asia operating from Bangkok, Thailand. The EMEM programme equipped me with the skills and knowledge that I am applying in matching investors and international expertise in development, financing and implementation of PV power plant solutions with Asian clients’ needs. I am thus an active player in the rapidly evolving sustainable energy market.

“The challenges that our industry faces are huge and encompass adapting to changes in the regulatory framework, creating more value through our energy production assets, reducing the energy consumptions and many more. I looked for a programme that would enable me to gain a thorough understanding of the energy sector and found the ESCP Europe Executive Master in Energy Management. This programme was perfectly adapted to pursue my career while training part time in the different campuses. I appreciated the diverse background of lecturers covering a wide variety of energy sectors but also from different viewpoints. The exchanges within the class gave me the possibility to share and tackle energy issues that I was facing within my company. I also acquired business skills that I was lacking. Finally, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the different fields of energy and the transitions taking place at the moment. This already helps me to evaluate projects with a broader perspective and give wiser recommendations to reach the energy goals that have been set in my company. I can testify that what I learned can be directly used in the projects I’m conducting now. To sum up, it has been a very fruitful experience and a great privilege to take part in this ESCP Europe adventure.”
